Count Your Blessings

In the spirit of not giving up, I've come to realize how very blessed I am. So often we take for granted the things we possess, and how God shows up in our lives constantly. Earlier today I posted an IGTV video - and as much as it was new for me and came with its own struggles - and in making the video I was so appreciative of where my journey has brought me. Having celebrated five years at my current employer, it's a tremendous accomplishment for me.
Initially, when I titled this post, I was writing from a place of gratitude not that I'm not grateful right now; however, the post was inspired by experiences that I had with two specific patients at work about two months ago. One of my patients was a young kid, with a poor prognosis. It was heartwrenching taking care of him because I could see that he was a pretty active kid with a promising future ahead of him, yet he was fighting a battle which he had no control. I remember conversing with his parents and just thinking of how distraught they must've felt. My aim is not to be morbid, I promise.
Having to care for patients who are younger than me, or who are in close proximity in age to my parents, hit home differently. Sometimes, I block out the emotional toll while working in order to perform properly. And then when I have days off, my thoughts marinate about the craziness of it all, and I have no choice but to be appreciative of my life. I don't know about you, but sometimes I find myself complaining about my job, my life, my situation, why are things happening the way they are; and then I realize how ungrateful I sound. Throughout the time I spent caring for those two patients, I kept saying "life is unfair"; and sometimes it really seems that way.
But God woke YOU up yet another day and spared your life; don't take that for granted. In my opinion, that's the single most important blessing that you need to acknowledge every single day. Many people don't get the opportunity to acknowledge their last breath. A perfect yet heartbreaking example is Chadwick Boseman. So many of us were unaware that he was battling colon cancer. He knew his days were numbered. To be honest, all of our days are numbered, yet we take it for granted.
Life is nothing but a rollercoaster. Even when the trajectory is directed upward, there are dips in the curve. There are downfalls, tragedies, disappointments, you name it. But if there's at least one thing that you can thank God for each day, do it.
